2008 Collegiate Nationals
April 11-13, 2008, DoubleTree Hotel, Denver, CO
The Texas A&M men took 5th place at the 2008 USAPL Collegiate Nationals, while the Aggie women took center stage with a 3rd-Place finish and two individual national championships. At the 2007 meet in Killeen, TX, neither the men nor the women placed, although the combined A&M team took 4th place behind LSU, LA Tech, and UT. No combined team award was given this year, however LA Tech reclaimed the Men’s Championship and LSU took the Women’s. This was the largest Collegiates ever, with both more lifters and higher totals than ever before.
In the first session of the 3-day meet, sophomore Alesha Summers won gold for the Aggies in the 97 pound class. This was Summers’ second Collegiate National competition, having earned 3rd in 2007. Freshman Tiffany McKinney, 181, brought home another 1st-place finish and set several records: her 391.3 lb squat was a National T3 (18-19 yrs) record, while her 286.6 lb bench press was a National T3 and Open (all ages) record and also an American T3 record. (American records can be set at any USAPL-sanctioned meets. National records can only be set at National meets.)
Both Summers and McKinney are All-Americans and will represent Team USA at the the IPF Junior World Championship later this year in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

Besides Summers and McKinney, the following Aggies medaled:

- Ryan Davenport, SO, 220, 3rd Place, All-American
- Ashley Owers, SO, 123, 4th Place
- Leigh Tullis, JR, 198+, 5th Place
In addition, many other A&M lifters earned points for the team and set PR’s.
Special thanks to Randy Johnson for taking the role of assistant coach, and to Jeff Scaparra for photographing the meet and for help handling lifters.
