2009 USAPL Collegiate Nationals
March 27-29, 2009, Family Christian Academy, Baton Rouge, LA
This weekend the Texas A&M Powerlifting Team took 3rd Place Overall at the 2009 National Championship meet in Baton Rouge, LA, the Aggie’s highest finish in 25 years!
The Women’s side was extremely close, as the Aggie Women finished 2ndwith 55 pts behind LSU’s 60. The Aggie Men finished in a 3-way tie for 6th place.
Overall, LSU won the National Championship for the 2nd time in 3 years, ULL took 2nd, and Texas A&M finished 3rd–not bad for a program that was rebuilt just 3 years ago!
- Individual highlights of the weekend include:
- Alesha Summers (JR, 97 lb) winning her weight class to get the Aggies off to a great start.
- Tiffany McKinney (SO, 181.5 lb) destroying her class and squatting a personal best of 413 lbs.
- Jake Carney (SR, 242 lb) winning his class by a solid margin. Jake fixed the weaknesses he had had in previous years and had a very consistent meet, making every important lift. He squatted 705 lb, benched 501, and deadlifted 617, for a personal best 1823 total. Once he made his last deadlift, his two closest competitors even gave up trying to catch him and decided to duke it out for 2nd.
- Dustin Witte (JR, 198 lb) squatting 750 pounds, the biggest squat of the meet, regardless of the weight class, and only 11 pounds off of the biggest squat in Texas A&M Powerlifting history (Tony Cardella 760, 2000).
Last but not least, the team-unity that we once worked so hard to establish has now become standard. No one had to be reminded of their jobs in helping their teammates–every time an Aggie lifted, they had a number of their teammates helping them directly with warm-ups and equipment, as well as the rest of their team helping indirectly, cheering them on from the stands. We still work hard to keep that camaraderie alive, but it’s nice to know that it is now “just what we do.”
