A phenom, Ashley Awalt began her athletic career at Texas A&M on the varsity softball team. After competing in both softball and powerlifting her freshman year, she switched to powerlifting exclusively as a sophomore. She won Collegiate, Junior, and Open National Championships and represented Team USA at the IPF Junior World Championships in 2004 and 2005. She won silver in 2005 and set a world bench press record of 275.5 pounds in the 123-pound class.
After a short break, Ashley began lifting again in 2008 and won the highest payout of all the powerlifting events at the 2009 Arnold Sports Festival. She currently serves the Texas A&M Powerlifting team as Assistant Coach and Team Dietician.

Since his time at Texas A&M in the latter half of the 90′s, Tony Cardella has become a household name in powerlifting. While at A&M, Tony not only lifted, but also led the organization as both President and Coach. He has multiple Collegiate and Junior National Championships, he was Open National Champion in 2001 and from 2003 to 2007, and he represented Team USA at IPF Worlds from 1998 to 2007. In 2007, he won the IPF World Championship, becoming the first American to win the 275-lb class since Kirk Karwoski in 1996.
He now trains in Houston, TX, but keeps a close association with the A&M team. We are grateful for all his help!

You started completely from scratch and became a real competitor. You tie-dyed socks, inspired the Robert show, gave Jake credibility, and couldn’t keep your hands, thoughts, or germs off of Dustin. If only you would have had more time with us! Already, though, your dedication and hard work have forever changed both you and the team.
Best of luck in medical school and don’t forget to have fun sometimes!

In recognition for your service as Secretary and Treasurer, where you raised our expectation for the position and allowed us to start improving our facility. Even more so, you brought color and intensity to the team. Whether you were inspiring people, cracking them up, or driving them crazy, your presence was always felt and we’ll sure miss you!
Don’t stop lifting until you’re Bench World Champion, and whatever you do, add a “1” to it!

You have been a model of dedication and can-do spirit. You attended more practices, events, and meets than most people and you did it as a mom. You have been a true teammate and have become my go-to girl for instructing new lifters.
Congratulations on graduating and on achieving your goal of losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle. Hopefully J.C. didn’t pick up too many bad habits at the gym!

In recognition of your service as Treasurer and creator of the now-annual Aggie Invitational, your crucial role in building the new team, and the fact that you always have the best jokes. Texas A&M Powerlifting would not be what it is today without your contributions and efforts!
You’ve grown from Viking to professional. Now it’s time for you to pop one off in the real world! Best of luck in law school!

Jeff Scaparra’s membership spanned the transition of the team from the era of Wade Hooper, circa 2002 – 2005, to the current era of Cort Spellman, which began in 2006. As a leader and role model both inside and outside the gym, Jeff played a large role in establishing the team as the successful, unified orgnization that it is today.
Jeff graduated from A&M with his B.S. in Computer Science in 2007 and then with his M.S. in Computer Science in 2009. He also led Texas A&M’s 2007 National Championship DefCon Cybersecurity Team, and helped direct the event in 2008. Today he is a computer programmer with the Department of Defense.

First and foremost, you are incredibly loyal and giving, always willing to help your team. Be it your time, your truck, your house, or your expertise, the answer has always been, “Yes.”
You were always up for a debate, whether about politics, religion, or tea, but once you got to the gym you were all about getting your work done.
From your adventures with Dustin to ordering Dr. Pepper by the pitcher to being the master of turbomachinery, you are the one-and-only SHEEEEEETS!

You balanced a fierce, competitive spirit with a heart of gold, making you all business on the platform and all giggles when doing anything else. You have been a true teammate, lifting hard when you were able and helping everyone else when you were injured. And let’s never forget how much you enjoy having your knees wrapped.
Best of luck in everything you do, and always remember you have a team that cares about you!
